The living area of the apartment is compact. There is a red couch with an orange blanket across the arm directly to the left of the front door when you walk in. There is a cowbell on the door that clangs every time it is open and shut. In front of the couch is a metal, turquoise coffee table. On it is a long tray with cartoon birds, it is empty. There is a stack of academic books next to the tray. On the bottom shelf are a stack of children’s books, most about cats, and another stack of what might be considered more traditionally “coffee table books”. To the right of the door is a coat closet, and then a fireplace. It is made from mismatched salvaged bricks that seem almost haphazard in their placement. There is a gate that covers the opening, and the informant has placed black and white checkered tiles and pillar candles inside. There is a bar level counter that divides the kitchen from the living space runs perpendicular to the fire place, and the cat dishes are housed in the corner made by the counter.
On the opposite wall is a standing lamp, movie poster, a small cat tower, and a black bookshelf that contains mostly academic books. The middle shelf also contains a bowl that is made out of a melted vinyl record that holds odds and ends, on the shelf above is a picture frame with the words “sisters” and a photo of the informant and younger sister at the beach as teenagers. The top shelf contains three decks of tarot cards, several small notebooks, a harmonica in a box, two clay cat heads that were made by a friend, as well as a figurine that another friend brought back to her from Japan. Next to the shelf is a small grey cart which holds books on the middle and bottom shelves and on top a desk lamp and a cup of pencils and pens.
Next to the cart is a small chair with wooden arms and a canvas cover. There is a brown and white electric blanket folded over the back and a pillow that features an orange hedgehog wearing sun glasses and playing a keyboard on the chair. The informant has indicated that this is one of her primary work areas, as well as a space where she likes to read and drink tea on the weekends. Behind the chair is a large aquarium on a black stand that houses an aquatic turtle.
